About Cree Nation of Nemaska

The Cree Nation of Nemaska is a Cree community in Eeyou Istchee, on the shores of Lake Champion in Northern Quebec.

The Cree Nation of Nemaska, ᓀᒥᔅᑳᐤ (Nemiskâw) in Cree, is located in Eeyou Istchee in Northern Quebec, on the shores of Lake Champion. The Cree Nation Government translates the name as "Place of Plentiful Fish." Nemaska is the capital of the Cree Nation and the seat of the Grand Council of the Crees and the Cree Nation Government.

Families once lived at the Nemiscau trading post. That site was abandoned in the 1970s, and the present village was built in 1977. Today, Old Nemaska, the original village site, is a cherished summer gathering place where community members reconnect with their ancestral land.

Traditional hunting and trapping are still a major part of the local economy, and Cree remains the community's language. Nemaska is a signatory community of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and is negotiating with the Government of Canada for self-governance.

Community life includes a Youth Council and a local school committee, and the Chief and Council are elected every four years. Learn more on the Cree Nation of Nemaska website.
